Godmodding #Lesson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeUMCgZdEyU

First of all, we're going to define what godmodding is and what it is not; then, we are going to share some methods to avoid it. Please keep in mind, this is just my personal experience; if you disagree, I'm happy to discuss.

*What Godmodding Is*

Godmodding is giving your character abilities without consequence or simply making up abilities as you go so they cannot possibly be defeated in combat.

Example: your character is an ordinary person living in an apartment in Brooklyn. They are confronted by a vampire. Suddenly, this ordinary person is half angel with unlimited regeneration and the armies of god at their command!

*What Godmodding Is Not*

If you come up against a character who far surpasses you in strength and ability, and has the background to be able to back it up, that is not godmodding. If you come up against a character who, through the course of an SL, has acquired an item which gives them the ability to summon demons from Hell, that is not godmodding. If it is an ability that is inherent in their nature (an angel's ability to use holy magic, for example), that is not godmodding.

I would like to note, however, that there should be consequences to these abilities, or they just are not fun to play or play with.

*Why People Godmod*

-Ignorance
I once godmodded. It was years ago, before I actually started writing fiction. I didn't mean to; I was just having fun and it was my first character. A lot of times, when it happens, it's a new player who simply wants to be impressive without realizing that powerful is less so and interesting is more so.

That is why you have vampire werewolf angel demons running around.

-Attachment
People spend time creating their characters and don't want to see them die.

-Fun!
A lot of experienced writers make bad characters intentionally, just for the hell of it. Usually they let you know in the bio. RP them, but have fun and be silly with it!
