Character VS Writer #Lesson inspired by @TwinSorcerers

A lot of people have a problem separating their character from themselves. It is a common problem, but it can lead to many conflicts. I can't tell you how to fix it, but I can tell you why it is an issue.

Your Own Character

If you RP well, the character you started with has very little with the character you ended with. This is called character growth.

We want our characters to grow.

Thus, our characters will occasionally do things we don't agree with. One of mine, for example, once encouraged a suicide and set up a camera crew to film it.

He is a bodiless being with no possibility of death. He wants to know what it is like. He will never experience it, so he will react differently to it. Also, keep in mind: this was a suicide in an RP character, not a writer.

I do not agree with it. If you are indeed thinking about suicide, please seek help. If your character is suicidal, don't expect every character in the RPverse to be kind.

Someone Else's Character

And this is something that I have encountered. Because my character does something does not mean I agree with it. It means the character wanted to do it.

Having a character who is satanic doesn't meant the writer is. It could, but it is unlikely. The same for homicidal characters.

React in character. Stay in character. Be expressive. Have fun. And if another character isn't acting like someone you want to be friends with, then don't be friends.
