Hello Facebook Friends. I have some news for you: After nearly six very rewarding years (5 years and 8 months to be more precise), Time Out New York and I have come to a mutual parting of the ways. My last day as a staff film writer will be Friday, October 10th, 2014.

I'm looking forward to starting a new chapter in my career, and am currently exploring options for freelance and full time work related to movies. I have many irons in the fire, but am also reaching out over social media to see what opportunities there may be.

As Quint says in JAWS, "You all know me. Know how I earn a living." I'm a film critic by trade, and my byline isn't going to go away. I've promised myself that you'll see at least a weekly post from me with thoughts on the movies. Writing reviews is a crucial part of my life, and I don't ever want to give that up. It's what I do.

There are practical realities, of course. Such is life. I'm not someone to let my own personal lot or any fluctuating feelings about the state of the critical profession (healthy in some ways, ailing in others, and perpetually in flux) get in the way of doing the work that needs to be done.

The movies are what I love, and I'm willing to engage with them in almost any way, not only as a writer, but as a programmer, an exhibitor, an archivist, a teacher, a speaker. Be it at an office desk, at a film festival abroad, or in a classroom in front of students of all ages. Likely, also, in ways that I'm not thinking of or can't yet conceive.

Short of it is, I'm very open to the kind of job I have, as long as movies are involved. They're too important an art form to lack for people who devote their lives to studying them. Who try, in some small way, to share that love with others. I want to be a part of that. I will always be a part of that.

Keith Uhlich
