I talked to a baseball executive today about Butch Baccala, the #mariners scout who was fired after the Jesus Montero ice cream incident. Baccala is known in the industry as an aggressive scout and a guy who likes to speak his mind. I've been told that he's a "little rough around the edges.'' But the exec called him a "loyal guy, a hard worker and a great scout'' who made a mistake and is paying an extremely high price for it. "Butch loves baseball as much as anybody I know,'' the exec told me. "He deserves a second chance, and whoever hires him will be glad they did.'' I don't know Baccala personally and I don't know all the circumstances behind the Montero incident, but I've been told he's devastated by what transpired. I don't think his transgression rises to the level of losing his job, and it certainly doesn't warrant him being drummed out of the industry. It would be nice to see another team give him a shot this winter.
