Sides Summary for Episode 11.06 Filming dates: Sept. 18 - 30

Melissa – Dr. Miller is checking Melissa who wakes up with a start. She’s disoriented and panicked. Dr. Miller explains to her that she’s in the hospital because she was pretty banged up but she’s alright now. Melissa is panicked and asks if they’ve found her computer. Dr. Miller tries to calm her down and asks if she remembers what happened. Melissa explains that she was sleeping on the train on her way to work and she woke up to some guys stealing her computer. She tried to hold on but they dragged her for a while and they punched and kicked her and she couldn’t hold on anymore. Dr. Miller asks her why she didn’t just let them take it. Melissa says the computer is all she has. She’s devastated.

(Scene 2) Dr. Miller says it’s okay because a computer is replaceable; they should be glad she’s alright and wasn’t killed. Melissa says that when she got out of the Army the job she had lined up was gone and so was her fiancé and the apartment she had with him. The only job she could get was at the Office Hub but it doesn’t pay well and they make you buy your own computer. She spent all the money she had to buy that computer because she needed the job. Now, without the computer she’ll lose her job. Dr. Miller suggests Government assistance, unemployment benefits, charities that help vets. Melissa says she used to fix computers in an operations office in the Green Zone. There were guys who were wounded in combat and they’re the ones who deserve help, not her for being robbed. Melissa sees her co-workers outside her room with a balloon bouquet and she’s mortified. Melissa asks Dr. Miller to leave and to not say anything to her co-workers. Dr. Miller is helpless to help her.

Jackie, Keith – Dr. Hall stands outside of the trauma room with the Melissa's co-workers (Caroline, Jacki, Keith – 20’s ). Keith says he found her on his way into work. She was laying on the ground and not moving; he thought she was dead. Dr. Hall asks them if they know anything about Melissa’s family or anyone they can contact. They all look at each other, stumped. Keith says Melissa never said that much. Jacki says they don’t really know her that well. They feel sorry and terrible about that.

Jeremy, Ellen, Erin – Dr. Kelly is with Jeremy (45) who is clutching his chest. Dr. Kelly palpates his belly and he feels pain. Jeremy swears it’s heartburn. He says his wife made him come but he should be at work and he needs to pick up his daughter later. Dr. Kelly asks if he had breakfast today. Jeremy says he had coffee, pancakes, sausage, eggs, a couple of energy drinks. He would’ve had more but he’s been having some trouble swallowing. Dr. Kelly frowns because that last bit is concerning and tells Jeremy he’s going to be admitted for observation.

(Scene 2) Dr. Kelley enters Jeremy’s room and finds him bickering affectionately with his wife Ellen (40’s). Ellen is saying to Jeremy that she always tells him to take more walks and to eat a salad once in a while instead of Philly cheesesteaks. Dr. Kelly says the EGD revealed a cancerous tumor. Jeremy says he came in for heartburn. Dr. Kelly says that’s likely what he had. But his poor diet caused acid reflux and made his esophagus the perfect home for cancer. Surgery is the best option and they’ll operate tomorrow. Ellen is scared and looks at her husband. Jeremy tells her it’ll be fine and she should go pick up Erin. She should tell her what’s going on but to not scare her. Jeremy is trying to remain upbeat but it’s obvious he’s terrified.

(Scene 3) Dr. Kelly enters the family room to find Ellen with her daughter Erin (16) leaning on her shoulder. Ellen stands and asks about Jeremy. Dr. Kelly tells her she should sit down. Ellen doesn’t sit but tells Erin to go outside. Erin refuses and takes her mother’s hand. Dr. Kelly explains that while they were making the surgical repair, Jeremy had a fatal arrhythmia. They did everything they could but he died in surgery. Ellen says it was just supposed to be heartburn. Ellen breaks down and Erin holds her mother as they weep together.
