On the feminist issue

On the feminist issue

We get messages from many different channels. Surprisingly most of them are good but many of them are critical of how we are using feminism. I just want to explain what I mean when I say we support feminism.

Feminism has an extremely large tent. For example Sarah Palin identifies as feminist as does Sasha Grey. One preaches abstinence before marriage, one monetizes the exact opposite and both are welcome to identify as a feminist, but both deserve criticism on their view on particular issues. We will leave it up to the reader to learn about these criticisms themselves. (P.S. If you don’t know who Sasha Grey is, turn on safe search first.)

To us, feminism is about equality. It’s about giving woman opportunities so they can create things, that everyone can enjoy. It’s not about punishing men, it’s about letting woman show how amazing they are. We don’t feel that censoring is the best way to change the public perception of woman. And we don’t feel like penalizing men for enjoying something that they are biologically wired to enjoy is enacting social change. Especially when many women enjoy the same media and characters just as much as men.

We feel the best way is to create social change, is to show what women can do, and then have the public come to their own conclusions. This contest is conclusive proof that women belong in the game industry. If we want men to support women they should do it because they like what the women created.

If we focus only on the person and not their idea, the only woman we will hear from, are those that are beautiful, charismatic, and have a story that resonate with the media. Think how many brilliant ideas are being lost, because the world isn't listening to a woman because she doesn't fit into the image of what society thinks a woman should be.

I don’t feel like anyone deserve to make something because of the hardships they faced. I feel all these hardships do is make people more dedicated, and give them the strength to create more powerful pieces. But unless we give them the opportunity to share their message with the world no one will hear their stories. And we just want to give them that opportunity. And just like I support Sarah Palin and Sasha Grey identifying as feminist, so can any other Internet site even if people are critical of some of their opinions.

If we only allow people to speak that no one is critical of. No one would be able to speak.
