Advice to the Single Women about taking Marriage Matters into their own Hands

From the Permanent Committee:

Question:

How can I be sure from the person who presents himself to me in proposal (for marriage) that he is one who holds fast to the injunctions of the legislation of Allaah regarding himself and his dealings, since many are those who claim that they hold fast to them?

Answer:

IT IS OBLIGATORY UPON THE WALEE OF THE WOMAN in this regard to strive to ascertain and ask about the one who proposed to his ward. If his religion and character pleases him (the Walee) then he is to marry his ward to him. If not then he is not to do so. The paths by which you can know the condition of a person are many and they are easy. From them is asking his relatives and his companions in work (i.e., those he deals with) and by investigating into his condition without being hasty in this regard. And with Allaah is the Tawfeeq. May prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
