[INTERVIEW] “SITR” Music Director Byun Heesuk, “I wanted to give the young actors a chance to play colorfully”

In the growth of the musical market, there is one man who communicates with the audience through music. It is Byun Heesuk (44), musical director of “Singing In The Rain” (directed by Kim Jaesung). […]

As the music director, he is on stage together with the actors, and therefore can see them at the closest distance. In addition, the music director is in charge of the beginning and end of the numbers, and has influence over the lighting and orchestra. As the music director who manages and accompanies the actors’ tempo, he was able to give his honest opinion of the main roles in “Singing In The Rain.”

“The main role, Don Lockwood, is impossible to pull off without working very hard. Jay lost a lot of weight while practicing. The most diligent actor is Kyuhyun. Baekhyun missed some practices inevitably due to his schedule, but then he practices afterwards to the extent of “menboong” (mental collapse). Their characteristics and colors are all different. (Laughs) Jay is very dignified and cool, even from a guy’s point of view. Kyuhyun’s stage is fun and cute. Baekhyun, in one word, is “daebak” (awesome). […]

Like others, he pointed out as his favorite scene the highlight scene of Act 1, the number “Singing in the Rain” which sings of love under cool torrents of rain. “The colors of love are all so different. Love is expressed in different ways. Jay is grand. If I were a woman, I would want to be loved by him. Kyuhyun feels like he would be interesting to be married to. Baekhyun is fresh and youthful, like a new leaf beginning to sprout,” he said, laughing heartily.

Among the actors, Baekhyun only went on stage in mid-July due to his busy schedule, even though the show had opened last month (June). Is it possible to be on stage even with less amounts of practice than the others? In addition, Baekhyun also had a hard time emotionally with the recent acknowledgement of his relationship with SM Entertainment co-affiliate GG Taeyeon.

On this subject, Director Byun commented: “Baekhyun, even at such a young age, is doing his best toward his duties like an adult. He wants to be on stage, he works hard, and he is always apologetic that he may inconvenience others. He is quite young for a musical actor, you know. He is an idol, meaning he has difficulties carrying on normal everyday life, but he still practices with good manners and diligence. He practices and practices again until his T-shirt is wet through and through,” saying that he was proud of the young actor. […]
