Sad to hear that Marvel legend, Dick Ayers passed away yesterday. I had the good fortune to work with Mr. Ayers on a number of Phantom Rider stories right when I was starting out.

On the first job we did together, he attached a note with the original art that said how much he liked the story. I was up in the office when it came in, and asked the editor if I could keep it. I put it inside the pages of my notebook.

And, every now and then, when I needed a pick-me-up, I'd look at that note and feel a measure of pride that Dick Ayers liked one of my scripts.

All of us who are working in this industry today-- we only get to do this because we stand on the shoulders of giants. I consider myself extra lucky that I had the chance not just to work with one who was so talented, but who was also a man that was kind and thoughtful.
