REPUBLIC OF IRELAND AGAINST RACISM MEETS THE METAL -#PHILFEST JUNE, 27th, 28th, 29th DROMCOURA CITY, BALLINAMORE, CO LEITRIM.
Ever thought of using a heavy metal festival in Leitrim as a vehicle to explore and discuss Racism in Ireland? Thought not! , but Republic of Ireland against Racism have and they have started a Fund it campaign to get there .Their deadline is May 19th on fundit.ie to raise the money http://fundit.ie/project/anti--racism-outreach-workshops-x3
Republic of Ireland Against Racism is a four year old voluntary group which opposes racism in Ireland & on the web. They are a 100% voluntary not for profit group comprised of people from all over Ireland & the world. They use social media & social media platforms like facebook, twitter & linked in as tools to fight racism. With over 1650 members on twitter and nearing 1000 on facebook groups like Republic of Ireland Against Racism challenge the notion that social media is for playing trivial games and switching off. They have also started a blog and have a YouTube account where they have built up a collection of films, videos & information about Anti Racism.
They have been invited to run anti-racism workshops over three days at a ‘Philfest’ independent music festival in Leitrim http http://www.philfest-ireland.com/
Republic of Ireland Against Racism was set up as a voluntary group in Nov 2010 to oppose Racism using social media & education both on & off the web. They now have 14 voluntary admins who run our social media pages seven days a week. They receive no funding whatsoever.
You can check out their following on twitter & facebook and follow their blog. They also have a YouTube account where they are building a collection of anti-racism movies and videos.
This year they are setting up an outreach service to provide anti-racism workshops in schools, communities, the workplace & festivals...
The festival is an independent music festival, Philfest in Leitrim. In the words of Philfest: “ What is it about? A real alternative festival. Loads of heavier bands, great alternative music and all in Wild West themed lake resort. Medieval activities, Archery, stalls, Republic of Ireland against racism, Fun Fair, and more.’’
ROIAR have designed a three day programme of events which will be run each day by their volunteers. They will make a small online publication of this event with short stories & photos from the workshop. Following on from this they hope to provide other anti-racism workshops in our communities across Ireland, in schools and at other small festivals. They want to create a beautiful creative and unique space at each event we attend for people to participate in our workshops. They want people who attend to learn and contribute to discussions & topics about racism /anti-racism and embracing our cultural diversity and differences, through art, storytelling, video making, and music.
They need to buy some practical equipment to successfully run our workshops; every penny of the money we raised will be used to purchase:
A projector and screen to be used for our outreach workshops.
T-shirts & merchandise for outreach workshops * * please note any T-shirts they get made will be from re-cycled materials on organic cotton and that any merchandising they use will not involve a mindless waste of plastic.
A small Marquee. (Cheap and cheerful!)
A fold up table and chairs/ seating...
Art Equipment: paper, paints, colouring pencils, pencils, fabric paints, canvas bags, blank T-Shirts, fabric markers.
They also want to launch their website and put up footage and information about their anti-racism workshops at Philfest and future events. They feel after four years that it is time to link all their social media accounts on their own website.
Their groups are growing daily on social media and they are very excited about the future of our group and the work they can do to educate against racism. Thank you for taking the time to read their proposal on Fund It, http://fundit.ie/project/anti--racism-outreach-workshops-x3
Much appreciated from Denise O Toole
& from all at ROIsaysno.
