[trans] TVXQ, How much did they earn this year... Sales breaking the 100 billion won mark

TVXQ (U-Know Yunho, Max Changmin) has broken the 100 billion mark in sales this year. Although this is not an official aggregate number, the concert ticket sales, DVD and album sales, travelling-related products etc combined would alone make it possible to reach that estimate.

TVXQ held a concert titled "Time Slip" on Dec 26 and 27 at Kintex 1 in Ilsan, Gyeonggi-do. These concerts saw approximately 20,000 fans attending them. In terms of TVXQ's fame, these concerts were of a smaller capacity than what would be expected, so the concert was of course sold out. The price of the tickets ranged from 90,000 to 110,000 won. Taking an average of 100,000 won per ticket, the ticket sales alone would be 2 billion won.

During these 2 days, more than 10,000 who attended were from various Asian countries including Japan and China, and from over the world such as France, Brazil, UK, America etc. Most of these overseas fans visited Korea through SM C&C's global package. According to the different types of accomodation, there were various different prices for the global packages and the total sales is roughly estimated to be about 10 billion won.

Before these concerts, TVXQ was in the midst of setting a record for huge sales revenue of approximately 91 billion won. TVXQ had a 5-Dome tour in Japan (Sapporo, Nagoya, Fukuoka Yahoo, Osaka Kyocera, Tokyo) and a concert in Yokohama's Nissan Stadium, which saw 850,000 people attend. The average price of these concert tickets was 9,800 yen. When calculating these numbers using the curreny conversion rate on Dec 30, TVXQ earned ticket revenue of approximately 83.4 billion won. The DVD which recorded the tour concerts cost 8,400 yen each and just on the first day of sales, made 7.8 billion won. If one to take into account even the revenue from the sale of MD products which are unable to be estimated, TVXQ's aggregate sales revenue this year is exceeding 100 billion won.

If one were to take a look at the revenue earned by TVXQ, who debuted in Dec 2003, this is not something to be surprised about. From 2005 when TVXQ ventured into the Japanese market, TVXQ has shown different results in terms of revenue. TVXQ had written various different types of records in the Oricon Charts history, and TVXQ's accumulated sales till December is approximately 8 million copies (Oricon singles, official DVDs etc included). Just by looking at the music sales, they are #2 in the whole of the Japanese music industry. Taking into account the approximate 4.5 million copies of albums sold in Korea in 10 years, this would be a staggering figure of 12.5 million copies.

SM Entertainment has never revealed the revenue from digital sales and album sales, but there are reference sources to look to. According to SM's public announcement about its capital increase in 2011 as seen in the public prospectus, TVXQ earned 117 billion won in just digital sales and album sales in that year (2011). This figure was recorded during the time when TVXQ was supposedly facing its biggest crisis when JYJ left in 2009 and TVXQ returned its first round of activities as a duo. This figure also excludes the revenue from concerts.

The biggest portion of TVXQ's revenue is undoubtedly the concerts. In 2012, TVXQ also had a 9-city tour in Japan, seeing 550,000 people attend their concerts, and saw them earning revenue of approximately 90 billion won in just 3 months. A related music industry analyst said, "It is not merely the revenue, but the direct and indirect economic effects enjoyed by SM Entertainment will exceed 1 trillion won".
