Mouse on Pilling

Rather than get into long twitter discussions, Mouse thought he'd just say this once.

Whilst most people seem keen to express either 'regret' or their 'welcome' to aspects of the Pilling Report, the reality is that the report is more about posing the questions we must answer, and framing them porperly, than it is about proposing solutions. It recognises a diversity of opinion and calls for a period of genuine engagement and discussion in a spirit of Christian love, which Christ said is the hallmark of his followers. It recognises that this diversity is based on genuine theological and Biblical understandings on both sides.

This is a wise recommendation, and one we should embrace. It is deeply unhelpful to fall into a lazy argument, characterising 'the other side' as either heretic or homophobe. But perhaps we could admit that examples of both can be found if we look hard enough. And perhaps we should also admit at the outset that there is no answer to this question which will accommodate the full spectrum of opinion. So if we are to accept Christ's call that we live as one body, we'll have to find a way of dealing with that.

Toodle pips,
