As part of #opswitch and burglary prevention, we are asking the public to work with your local Police to make it harder for the criminal people in our community to commit crime. Many houses will be left unattended early evening when the clocks change, so please take a few precautions before leaving home to reduce your risk of becoming a burglary victim. Below are a few tips to reduce your chance of a break-in:

■Ensure all doors, windows and security screens are locked and activate alarms if you have them.

■Enlist the help of your neighbours as they can play a big role in preventing offences by keeping an eye out for each other. If you are going away then inform a neighbour and ask them to assist with mail collection and placing rubbish bins out at the usual collection times to give your home the ‘lived in look’.

■Make sure tools and ladders are kept in a secure place – offenders often use garden equipment and wheelie bins to break into premises.

■Be vigilant if you see suspicious activity occurring in your neighbourhood then report it to police.

Remember don’t turn a blind eye to crime prevention – Increase the effort required for offenders to commit the crime, this will reduce criminal activity in our community.
