.@nspcc statement on sentencing of Daniel Pelka's murderers | Peter Wanless, Chief Executive of the NSPCC, said: “Little Daniel Pelka suffered immeasurable pain at the hands of Magdalena Luczak and Mariusz Krezolek and we welcome the long prison sentences his murderers will serve for their repulsive crime. They cowardly harmed a defenceless child and then blamed each other for his death in a pathetic attempt to escape justice. Thankfully this failed. We may never know, and certainly never understand, why they singled Daniel out for such sickening abuse, but we do know that the right place for them is behind bars for many, many years.

“There is understandably a huge sense of public outrage and horror that this little boy should have endured so much cruelty during his tragically short life and questions are rightly being asked as to how his murderers could have been allowed to subject Daniel to such despicable torment.

“There are many brilliant professionals and citizens who are alert to the signs of abuse, whose timely actions to prevent harm never make the headlines. But, when adults are hell bent on destroying a child’s life and doing all they can to deceive those around them, the criticality of questioning a child’s behaviour and speaking out about it is more important than ever.

“The serious case review will look at whether agencies and professionals involved with Daniel missed opportunities to protect him and we will say more then. In the meantime, we can all play our part to protect children and I urge anyone with concerns about a child to speak up without delay and contact the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000, the police or children’s social services. It could save a life.”
