Fragile Hearts, NHS Meeting Press Release: At Fragile Hearts we represent the many parents who have lost their beloved children or seen them suffer medical harm as a result of their heart surgery.

Since the Bristol Heart Scandal of the 1980’s and 90’s, we have been aware that the very system designed to care for our precious babies was creaking and quite possibly broken. After years of promises, reviews and subsequent failures by those in positions of power; we are still witnessing, too many children suffering or dying and it must stop. We believe there is a human tragedy the scale of Mid Staffs taking place right now, affecting poorly and vulnerable children across the entire Country.

Parents from Fragile Hearts met with NHS England on Thursday to present their individual experiences and discuss concerns the group have over Leeds General Infirmary children’s heart surgery. The meeting proved to be incredibly productive and enabled Fragile Hearts to represent its parents in a more formal manner, to those charged with ensuring the safety and care of our precious children. NHS England were incredibly supportive of our grieving and traumatised parents and we feel the continued dialogue between both parties, will help to drive the right outcome in this long running saga of reconfiguring children’s heart surgery in England.

We feel that this was a positive meeting in which NHS England confirmed they are continuing to review and analyse a number of cases with a view to ensuring that all services provided at the Leeds Unit are delivered to the highest clinical and duty of care standards.

We look forward to working with NHS England and moving forward together in this important phase; a phase that will help to shape the future of children’s heart surgery throughout this region and beyond for the benefit patients and their families and those who care for them.
