Some thoughts on the Boston Marathon bombings:

It's too early to express much beyond shock, horror, and sympathy. But watching the video of one of the detonation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=046MuD1pYJg&feature=youtu.be), I'm struck by the contrast between the flags in the foreground and the explosion behind them. In a film, the symbolism would be unmistakable: attacks on innocent people in public events aren't merely political attacks; they're attacks on the notion of shared humanity itself.

The pairing of that image with the police, military, and eventually civilians helping clear the wreckage, helping to save all these people from around the world without respect to national origin, the extraordinary empathy of the moment transcending all division...the contrast between the best and the worst in humanity couldn't be clearer.
