I am asking my friends to resist promoting the abhorrent article misrepresenting the content of my sermon on patriarchy and homosexuality and the perceived ties between my sermon and the firing of my friend Ryan Bell from ministry. I refuse to make a direct reply to the article because the author clearly has no constructive aim for the overall benefit of the denomination except to further a misguided agenda. I believe deep disagreements between members of a church can still be an opportunity to learn and grow together. This is my firm trust in the possibility of discourse that requires people to open up to each other for the sake of the whole. But this cannot happen if we throw each other under the bus by resorting to the kind of tone the article takes, one that paints someone as dangerous just because they stand for inclusivity and calling the church to a different ethic. The article does not reflect mutual accountability that a community of peacemaking depends on. Note that my sermon was not a call to you, they, or them but a call for me, us, and we to question ourselves more deeply. #church #peace #discourse #accountability
