Bob Katter MP does democracy 101 on the Gold Coast

"We've got to take the last few months of weather as a wake up call," said Mayor Tate at today's launch of the Gold Coast City Council's Draft Ocean Beaches Strategy.

"I need your help."

And following speeches and a DVD presentation Bob Katter MP did just that - sort of.

Immediately garnering the attention of the 100 or so hacks, advisers, groupies, about 10 members of the public and a handful of lunchtime diners at the Southport SLSC, Katter professed his love for the Gold Coast (particularly the Broadwater) and endorsed the Mayor's Ocean Beaches Strategy - which currently takes the form of another glossy brochure filled with weasel words.

"What we do not support is what he's doing in the Gold Coast Broadwater," he said.

Meaning a cruise ship terminal on the Gold Coast Spit.

Flanked by KAP Queensland Senate Candidate Keith Douglas, Katter MP explained that he supports the idea of a terminal but it should only be constructed offshore.

Trouble is only the Gold Coast's political and media class (i.e. 1% of the population) actually support a cruise ship terminal.

Locals know whether onshore or offshore a cruise ship terminal spells ecological and economic disaster for the region.

In any case, it was refreshing to have yet another suffocatingly stage managed media/PR event gatecrashed.

This country could definitely use more of it - and in that respect Katter MP sets a stellar example.
