Sina Entertainment Report
On March 3rd, 2013, American rocker Adam Lambert landed in Shanghai and held a concert at the Mercedes Benz Arena, which attracted numerous enthusiastic and ecstatic fans. During the pre-show interview, Lambert said he likes some new indie bands that won in the Grammy’s this year. He also talked about his own understanding and attitude towards fashion.

Before concert started, Adam Lambert spared time for interviews. During which he said he wished that fans would feel as happy and carefree as if they were in a PARTY at his concert. When asked about the many indie bands and new faces that won Grammy Awards recently, he said that he likes them. ‘I love the Grammy’s, and I definitely believe that indie bands, not just rock and roll, are new trends. I like bands such as Imagine Dragons; Fun is great too. It’s all very exciting.” As to been the lead singer of The Queen for the 4 concerts last summer; he said he felt very honored. “I love this band! They are great men! It was an unbelievable opportunity. Yes, I hope there are future opportunity to work with them again.”

Lambert cameoed in American TV drama Pretty Little Liar Halloween Special Edition as a vampire last year, and had some acting with actress Lucy Hale. That was a very interesting and fun experience for him. “Although I only had a short appearance, I had lots of fun. They are very friendly. I’ve never appeared in a TV drama before, so it’s exciting. I hope there were more opportunity like that in the future.”

Lambert’s appearance usually marked with exaggerated eye makeup, nail polish, and super cool fashion; which are fans’ scream-inducing styles. When it comes to his fashion style, he was full of confidence. “That’s right, my look is what I wanted. People used to look at me and thought I’m weird, but that’s how I like it and I don’t care what they think. I think that’s one of the aspect of fun in fashion: Style yourself to your own preference and make yourself unique.” On the styles he might try in the future, he said “I don’t have many pre-set ideas about fashion, maybe now I want to try looking like this and that’s it; I’m not thinking far ahead about my look.” Following that he said he would also pay more attention to fashion shows and magazines, and try any style or color that tickled his fancy.

With a signature high note, Lambert flashily appeared on stage in a well-cut sapphire blue suit with swept up hair, black nail polishes, leather fingerless gloves and luxuriously sexy smoky eye makeup. All this to go with the searing lyrics of ‘If I Had You’, he brought the arena to a boiling high. After that he sang ‘Naked Love’, ‘Cuckoo’ and many fast tempo dance songs. While he was singing he continuously moved about the stage, one moment he pasted himself to the bassist and had a hot dance, or stick the microphone on it’s stand and did choreographed dance with his dancers. But the most scream of appreciation went to his ever changing facial expressions; all sorts of exaggerated expressions appeared on his face, totally illustrated his freakish nature. With a “Hi, Shanghai!” he started the night of rock and roll: “Are you ready? The night is young, it’s just begun, and I hope it’ll never end!”

After the fast songs and hot dances, Lambert changed into all back leather clothing while the band entertained the audience with some jam, and reappeared on stage. With the beginning chord of ‘Whataya Want from Me’, the arena burst into high decibel screams. He moved a stool onto the center of stage, sat down, and used his tender voice to slowly convey his love of the Shanghai fans through his music. On top of his excellent songs, the ‘must sing’ of this tour, Little Heavenly Queen Rihanna’s ‘Stay’ was sung too. During the pre-show interview Adam said appreciatively that Rihanna is a sexy singer.

What set him apart from the other Western singers was: Lambert took care to prepare many splendid costumes. Every time he got off stage to change, his band gave wonderful performance to ignite the audience’s passion, and kept the festivity going. During one of such interludes, two male dancers clad in see through mesh tops helped the backup singers change costumes right on the stage. The two female singers who were wearing exploding afro wigs enticed the audience with angelic voices.
Lambert, who reappeared in a top hat, fringed sleeves, leather vest and leather lace-up pants but bare-footed, sent the audience into a new frenzy. He performed ‘Underneath’, ‘Fame’ (note, must be typo for other song. These reporters didn’t have the help of recording before deadline. ☺) Lambert generously exhibited his more than excellent ‘dolphin register’. Lambert also led the audience to a call and return session during ‘Fever’. He demonstrated his extraordinary live performance ability by singing a capella. The free style dancing and his rhythm driven ‘motorized hips’ gave the audience a chance to marvel at his dancing skill.

When he returned to stage one last time performing the theme song of this concert: Trespassing; the audience knew that the party was about to end. Surprisingly, Lambert returned after second encore and gifted the audience with a performance of ‘Strut’, which was not on his set list. This is the only second encore Adam gave during this tour, so far. It’s a special gift Adam Lambert gave to his Shanghai fans. Although regretting the end, the audience gave their all screaming and cheering, ending this early Spring Adam Lambert’s glamorous rock and roll party with a perfect period.
