March 3rd is the day handsome American rock singer Adam Lambert performs his solo concert in Shanghai at Mercedes Benz Center; that will be the only stop of his We Are Glamily world tour in Mainland China. On Feb. 25 we interviewed him over the phone. Adam Lambert has been in all sorts of controversy ever since his debut on television. But that in no way hinder his incomparable musical attraction. He said: “I believe in love, music and I believe I can bring joy to people. These kept me forge ahead without hesitation.”

On stage Adam Lambert was at times intoxicating and at times full of romantic love. His songs and fashion were extremely glamorous. The kohl eyeliners and black nail polish are almost his unmistakable personal brand. When talked about his tour, Adam Lambert was very animated. “Welcome to my musical party!” His commanding air were busting at the seams. No wonder his fans call him ‘Lord Dang’. Although many foreign singers would sings some songs in Chinese when performing in China, Lord Dang shut down the speculation with a ‘no’ without hesitation. Following that he sheepishly said “Sorry!” Perhaps that’s what he is: a frank and direct person, with a tinge of childlike charm. When mentioned that people expects him to be the next Michael Jackson, he replied reverently “This expectation is too lofty. He’s a legend and I just got started.”

We talked about his concert, his favorite Shanghai dish and covering Rihanna’s song

163 Entertainment: Shanghai is your only stop in China. Why here?
Adam Lambert: I’ve been to Shanghai a few times and I really like this city. I have many fans here. I remember this one time I came to perform in Shanghai and I stayed in this hotel that has a rooftop bar. From there I could see Shanghai at night; it was so beautiful! Also I love Shanghai’s little steamed dumplings. (Note: A famous dumpling with very thin dough wrap with yummy filling and hot broth inside. Very tricky to pick one up without breaking and can burn unsuspecting eater’s mouth)

163 Entertainment: Did you do any special preparation for this concert in Shanghai?
Adam Lambert: In this world tour every stop the show will be slightly different. The condition and atmosphere will not be the same. Even when I’m singing the same song, the way I sing it live will be different. The chemistry is always different.

163 Entertainment: You covered Rihanna’s ‘Stay’ in Seoul, Korea; whose song will you cover for the Chinese concert?
Adam Lambert: My set list for my Seoul and Tokyo concerts were the same. I will still sing this song in China.

163 Entertainment: What did you learned/observed since your world tour? Can you share with us?
Adam Lambert: Every time I saw the audience sings along it always made me very happy. That made me feel that my music can bring people together. From this tour I get to find out what kind of artist I am and what kind of music touches my fans’ hearts. It helps me communicate the things I want to express more easily; and it made clear to me what kind of outdated concepts I could break.

Singing competition show: Stay true to yourself is key to longevity, and the importance of a fan base

163 Entertainment: How does your experience as a musical theatre actor influence your music career right now?
Adam Lambert: When I started out at children’s theatre, I knew I found my talent and my passion. Music theatre enlightened me. It’s not until I grew older that I gradually get to know other genre of music.

163 Entertainment: During your American Idol run, you rework the songs into your own. How did you get ideas to rearrange the songs?
Adam Lambert: I didn’t have a clear idea; I just followed my instinct.

163 Entertainment: From an ordinary person to a super star, your status went through dramatic change. What’s your life like right now compared to before?
Adam Lambert: Nowadays I have many obligation and work everyday, and my schedules are tight. When I was an ordinary person I walked down the street without any recognition; now I experience the Star Effect: no matter where you were in the world, someone recognized you. Of course there are things that didn’t change. For instance, the friends I made during American Idol were still in contact. My friends and family support me just like before. These didn’t change.

163 Entertainment: You were invited as a VIP guest to perform in The Voice China. There are many singers now who wish to become famous through this kind of singing competition show. You came from the same; would you give them some suggestion?
Adam Lambert: When participating in this kind of singing competition, the contestants should choose songs they understand and well known to the audience. Also, you’ve got to know what kind of songs you want to sing. It’s very important to be yourself and find your own style. If you can do both then you’ll have a better chance to give a better performance and advance.

163 Entertainment: Do you have suggestions for contestants to achieve career longevity?
Adam Lambert: It’s very important to work hard. If you want to have a music career, then there are many things you have to do. Also, a fan base can be very helpful. If they like you, then you might have a longer career. If the audience doesn’t care for you, then your music career might be short-lived.

On future: The love of music made me forge ahead fearlessly

163 Entertainment: What stance do you take on your own music style?
Adam Lambert: Since I was a kid I like the kind of music that’s confident and happy. Now I can gradually materialize that concept. My album Trespassing has many styles of music. There are classic rock, funk and disco elements in it. I mixed all kinds of styles of music together and made it my own. Whether it’s retro or modern, I like them all.

163 Entertainment: You used to say this album expressed your vulnerability and fear. May I ask what are your afraid of?
Adam Lambert: This album presented some of my insecurities, loneliness and confusion. It covered the light and dark side of me. Such as ‘Chokehold’, in there the feeling of heartache and confusion intertwined. In ‘Underneath’ there is anxiety of being suppressed. They are reflection of the real me. Also stated in there are things that I desire in my life.

163 Entertainment: When you encounter obstacles, what made you continue your pursuit with determination?
Adam Lambert: I believe in love. I also worship art. My music can sooth my audience, and I can make happy music to entertain others. These are the factors that push me forward. And I am enthusiastic in my pursuit. My family and friends are all unyieldingly supportive of me forging my path. I don’t like to categorize people by country; all people of the whole world are family.

163 Entertainment: You had an appearance on ‘Pretty Little Liars’ last year. Do you have any future plan in acting?
Adam Lambert: Although I don’t have any plan for an acting career for the time being, I’m interested in future opportunities.

163 Entertainment: What is the progress of your new album?
Adam Lambert: We had discussions, and I have some new ideas. But right now I can’t tell you yet.

163 Entertainment: Someone speculated that you are the next Michael Jackson. What do you think about this opinion?
Adam Lambert: It’s a high praise. He is someone I like and respect. He made me realize I should have my own style and allure. Legends are those who combine music, fashion and life into one. Michael was always breaking boundaries, and making his own world. Compare to these legends, I’m just starting up.
