@vectorpoem From my preview: Crystal Dynamics' global brand director Karl Stewart jumped ahead a few hours to play through a later section. Here, Lara's preying on unsuspecting enemies with the bow, and burning others alive with nearby jet fuel. It's typical game fare, but suddenly absurd and unsettling in a game that's introduced killing as the horrific, unconscionable last resort of a desperate woman, one that leaves her crying through a faceful of blood.

Karl has Lara close in on a reloading goon to stab an arrow through his skull. I ask him later: is there any practical benefit to that move?

"Oh, it's melee, right? That's just one example, there's /tons/ of cool examples of 'up close'. But no: our designers and our animators thought 'How cool would it be that you just take out an arrow and just stick it through his head!'" He laughs. "That would be pretty awesome, wouldn't it?"
