Sri Lanka’s United Nations Deputy Permanent Representative Shavendra Silva who faced several allegations when he was posted to the Lankan mission at UN had been invited by the United States Marine Corps University in South St, Quantico, New York to lecture on the subject of defeating terrorism.

At the lecture he said winning a war was not merely eradicating enemies but included post conflict sequences of finishing concurrent and coincidental activities. “Wherever the war is being fought and won, you have a bigger fight on your hands behind the screen as what we have done by now. I do know you are well aware of these things and are already deployed to do so in future but as a man who fought a terrorist war I’m certainly aware that the world at large will not point guns at each other explicitly but act in covert mode all over by way of launching Guerilla and terrorist tactics which are more sophisticated than open combat,” he said.

Major General Silva said Sri Lankan Defeat of Terrorism in the region where the island is located had been extraordinary and eye catching for enthusiasts.

“Whoever is for buying ‘terrorism cannot be defeated by military means’, thus many are aware that we, the whole Sri Lankan nation together has defeated terrorism in our country,” he said. “Since you are so sophisticated and top secret affiliation to modern warfare in any part of the world with US Marines I, at the highest point in my knowledge assure that the terrorism can certainly be tamed and defeated if you learn lessons from the past.

In my opinion the fighting of terrorism is much more than fighting in conventional wars.” Major General Silva said the saga of neutralisation of Sri Lankan terrorism was no doubt a great landmark in world history even though some shadows of it are still fluttering and dancing outside the country without leadership and doctrine to be presented to win international sympathy today.

He said the SL Army had been capable of infiltrating the enemy territory and kill the enemy and escape without a trace especially when it operated in the northern jungle terrain.
