Full account of the last night's horrific attack on final year engineering students

Engineering undergraduates have witnessed signs of a major gathering of the whole set of NDT students from the morning in the university. Engineering students have felt that they are lining up to create a clash and they have informed the CSO (Chief Security Officer) of University of Moratuwa by 7.00 pm.

NDT students have started attacking the engineering students at about 10pm, who were studying for the exam on the next day at A–hostel. Those NDT students had started violently attacking the rooms of engineering students with sticks by even breaking the doors of the A-Hostel. Some of them were holding swords as well. And also they have started throwing petrol bombs, crackers and explosives made with bottles and crackers.

They brutal attackers have vehemently damaged the properties of the University by breaking the doors and windows of the rooms where Engineering students have been staying. One has to simply visit the A-Hostel premises to realize the primitive attitude of the attackers. Among the numerous examples of public property destructions, they had broken the door and jumped into room number 31, which is the room of the engineering faculty student union secretary, where the engineering students had to jump from the upstairs to save their lives since those NDT students had big swards in their hands. Finally they have put petrol and were about to set fire to the other rooms, where the engineering students were locked inside.

Engineering students spent 3 to 4 hours hiding inside the ceiling trying to save their lives. The swords, steel rods, knives and petrol bombs created such great fear in the engineering students. This level of inhuman behavior is unacceptable from any individual in the society.

Among the NDT party which came to the attack, there were around 700, whom for sure cannot be all NDT. There were some parties who are complete outsiders to University of Moratuwa. Definitely, there were more people than the number of NDT students who have been given permission to access the University. As the engineering students have heard, lots of hired gangsters have also joined to attack.

The misbehaved NDT thugs have even entered the girl’s hostels as well in search of any male engineering undergraduates and have threatened and frightened the girls, which is a really unacceptable deed.

An inspection was carried out in the rooms of the “A” hostel, after the brutal attack. It was found that in room ‘31’ where engineering student union secretary stayed, his mobile phone, lap top and other valuable items were missing.

The involvement of personals other than the University students who are complete strangers to university and entrance of these people into the university premises have caused such a brutal and fearful situation. It was indeed an organized crime.

It must be strictly mentioned that the ones who broke into the hostel rooms could be identified clearly.

Right from the beginning, the engineering students have acted in the proper manner by informing about a possible clash to the CSO. They have followed all the instructions given by the higher administration. Yet, they have faced the most fearful hours of their lives, fearing for death.

It is very disappointing to say that one of the engineering students who got injured severely in the head is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Colombo General Hospital.

The inhuman NDT attackers have threatened them to death and have shouted with all the filthy words in the world. All what they got by abiding to the regulations were severe cuts and bruises for both body and mind. But the engineering students will keep continuing to abide by the laws and be human in every aspect of it, because we do not accept brutality and cannibalism
