"Obama administration officials remain divided over the wisdom of prosecuting Assange"

So there are still some pushing for his prosecution.

"The Obama administration has said Assange's immediate fate is in the hands of Britain, Sweden and Ecuador."

The phrase "immediate fate" implies the possibility of Mr Assange's fate being in U.S. hands in the future, precisely why he does not want to go to Sweden without assurances against onward extradition, and also the main reason President Correa granted him asylum.
