[Edited Trans] 'Rooftop Prince' Park Yoochun, "Staying up all night filming, too tired to catch the live broadcast"

The eventual winner of the intense battle of Wed-Thurs drama of the 3 broadcast stations is SBS's 'Rooftop Prince'. The three dramas that had started and ended on the same day, same time repeatedly overtook and surpassed each other in the viewership ratings battle, in the last episode, viewership ratings for 'Rooftop Prince' were the highest. In the centre of the drama is Park Yoochun. He naturally portrayed the Joseon crown prince 'Lee Gak', 'Lee Gak who pretended to be Yong Taeyong', and 'Yong Taeyong', etc, individually portraying 3 roles and has thus received recognition for his acting. After making a debut as an idol-turned actor, this is the third successful work following the great success of 'Rooftop Prince' and 'Miss Ripley'. Coming down from the rooftop house proud and dignified, 'crown prince' Park Yoochun met me on the 29th at a restaurant in Seoul, Gwanghwa-mun.

- Drama eventually ended 1st. Tears acting was especially memorable.
"This time, in the drama, I never once had to force out tears. The command to 'cry' was not written in the script... In the two kiss scenes, tears came out both times? The first tear was when Lee Gak acknowledged that he liked Park Ha, and that as a nation's king, he had to give up a lot, thus he cried. The second crying kiss scene was in episode 19's wedding scene, because it was too sad, the tears gushed out. Jimin-ie noona started crying during the rehearsal, the director and the other staff all cried as well. If I was Lee Gak, I will never let go of her hand, what a fool. While letting go of her hand temporarily, Lee Gak went back to Joseon."

- Many were wondering if the ending could be wrapped up well, but the ending received great compliments.
"It was different from the original ending, and the effect was better. Like everyone knows, the scriptwriter's wife passed away. The extent of how the scriptwriter miss his wife, that feeling could be sensed from the script, because of the sincerity that had connected with me, I was able to immerse into acting. Especially for episode 20. The scriptwriter said himself during the ending party that, 'it is my story'."

- This time, the three tones used in the drama, tone used by Lee Gak, tone used by Lee Gak who is adapting to modern day, and tone used by Yong Taeyong, was it not hard? Whose idea was it to separate them using spectacles?
"From the start, it was written in the script to use spectacles, as such I received lots of help. That spectacles helped switched Lee Gak and Yong Taeyong. The speech tempo for modern day drama is faster, and slower for sageuk, to mix them was a little hard, and I suffered a little. In the beginning, because of greed, I deliberately NG for many scenes. I don't wish to go out acting recklessly."

- What was the most difficult and regrettable?
"Staying up all night everyday, returning home only once a week, then going to sleep without catching the live broadcast. Most of the scenes were outdoor, to meet the filming schedule was the hardest. Almost ran into broadcast incident. In the drama, when Lee Gak found out that his feelings for Park Ha were evolving, the reason he developed such an attitude towards Sena, etc, the lack of depiction for these emotions were regrettable. A drama that had originally required the portrayal of many things had omitted many of such in the middle.

- In the process, you seem to have immersed into Lee Gak. Many people around you say that 'Lee Gak' and 'Yoochun' are similar.
"That's right. It was thus very convenient for me, and I had greater desire. While reading the script, I would think of how to act. I didn't sense it while filming, but after it ended, I realised I received much consolation from Lee Gak in every moment."

- Do you find that you've matured a lot after this piece of work?
"'Sungkyunkwan Scandal' was the first piece of work, because of that, time passed quickly and there was no time for reflection, for 'Miss Ripley' the burden was really great. When I filmed for the first time, the words 'I can't do it' reached my throat. Lines that can just be said anyhow had me go into deep consideration many times. To be honest, this time, for the drama, I did not think that 'I need to do well'. I naturally immersed into the character without any burden and pressure. Has become more at ease."

- How was it like working with Han Jimin who is elder by 4 years? Did you not see her as someone of an opposite sex?
"Jimin noona was straightforward like the rumours said. A feeling of 'neighbourhood noona'? I didn't have to work particularly hard and we became closer naturally. But at the drama filming site, I didn't call her noona but 'Park Ha'. It was the same for the others. Sena, Chisan, Manbo, etc, and referred them by their character's name. Watching Jimin noona act, I have once thought that if someone like Park Ha does exist, she would be very charming. But once the acting ends, she changes back into Han Jimin, so there was not much problem. (laughs)"

- Previously, you appeared together with your younger brother Park Yoohwan who has just started acting on 'Baeksang Arts Award'?
"It was a different feeling as compared to when I attended awards ceremony with my members. Watching Yoohwan walking his own road well, I can now enter the military at ease. I prepare to enter the military in 1~2 years' time, I worry if my family will have enough to live comfortable and if I have to prepare them well before leaving. If I had a dream, that would be to attend 'Cannes Film Festival' with Yoohwan. One day, there is sure to be a work where I work together with Yoohwan, like 'Brothers' Story'. It's as though acting like we're real brothers when we're not. In the future, when I become a veteran actor, won't it be possible?"

- After the drama ends, what would you like to do? The next piece of work?
"I've communicated with Taesung hyung, would like to tour the nation driving the car, taking a tent and cookware. Personally, it doesn't matter if it's a movie, drama, play or album, I just want to quickly return. Will decide within June without taking a break, and also to receive acting lessons. As for an antagonistic role, we'll leave it for the future, at the filming site, a female fan retracted her steps when she saw Taesung hyung. (hehe) In the future, I would like to act as a psychopath-like intense antagonist."

- Do you not plan to date?
"Well, I don't know. A woman who treats mother well? If we fall in love, isn't it given to be filial to the parents of both parties? I hope that no matter where I go, I can proudly announce that 'She's mine', and that she's someone others can give blessings to. Regardless, because I'm a celebrity, when the two of us are together, it is important as well that we appear lovable. If it's someone like that, I have thoughts to publicly reveal my relationship."
