Jet-black hair, eyeliner, studs and spikes, and a trademark leather jacket. Our hero stands out even against his eccentric music stage colleagues. He is the one who managed to revive a long forgotten glam rock genre and make it popular again so easily; he is the most scandalous American Idol alum, a multi-platinum vocalist, actor, songwriter, philanthropist and a precious dream of the whole female Earth population. He is Adam Lambert.
The rebel-to-be was born on January 29, 1982 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Adam was a first-born of Leila Mitchel and Eber Lambert. Even though Lambert Junior is a half-Jew, he was raised Jewish. However, no one ever doubted the artistic boy belonged to the stage. That’s why Adam’s Mom never objected to son’s performances at Jewish events. At the age of 9 the boy got interested in theatre, especially musicals (it should be noted that this liking has remained with him for all his life). Despite his average looks (yes, he wasn’t always a hottie), Adam was rather popular in high school – no wonder, because not a festive event went without him participating in it. During his school years Adam started several musical bands, became a school theatre superstar, and even took a hand in iconic “Charlie Brown”. After graduating from school Adam got enrolled in one of the Californian colleges, but quit it after 5 weeks, deciding to devote his time and energy to the art. Over a year he was looking for a job and his place in this life, and finally, Lady Luck smiled at him in 2011. Adam managed to get a role in a production of Hair: The Musical. “It was then that I realized who I wanted to be. I learned so much about myself. Sex, drugs and rock & roll came into my life at that time,” Adam said later in one of his interviews. In fact, Adam dyed his hair black for the first time during the Hair tour. Although all the shows Lambert took part in were sell-outs, he was far from popular. Adam knew that if he wanted to be famous, he needed to show his best. Soon afterwards, the opportunity presented itself.
Lambert surprised the judges with his heartfelt singing at the auditions for season 8 of the main American music competition show “American Idol”. Despite incredulity of the main judge, Simon Cowell, he still got the desired pass. It wasn’t a surprise that from the very first episodes of the show Lambert has become its main favourite. His cover version of Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” was undoubtedly one of the greatest moments of the whole season.
Week in, week out, Adam managed to raise the bar with his performances. He didn’t seem to have a song he couldn’t sing. Classic “Feeling good” was re-energized by Lambert’s performance.
And when no one doubted that Lambert would win, the pictures appeared on the Internet where the new favourite of the girls aged 16-60 was kissing…guys!
Scandalous pictures shocked homophobic America. This situation played into the hands of the main Lambert’s competitor – nice and romantic Kris Allen. Adam didn’t deny the pictures were real and said that he’d never hidden his sexual orientation. This move didn’t make him more popular, but made people respect him. Lambert came as a runner-up, but everyone saw it as a victory. Victory over prejudices and hang-ups. Victory over everyone censuring him. Victory over himself….
Unlike the majority of American Idol alumni Lambert didn’t mooch on evanescent fame and started working on his debut album. “For Your Entertainment” was released 5 months after the show end with the title track as the first single.
It caused quite a stir with its provocative images, but worldwide fame and recognition came to the performer with “Whataya Want From Me”. 100% hit which turned Adam into international superstar did well in charts, and its music video is now reaching the mark of 30 million views!
The third single from the debut album was dance track “If I Had You”. A lot of people took part in the shooting of this music video, and the most attentive viewers even spied freak icon Jeffree Star and trash pop singer Kesha among the cameo.
Adam’s debut was a success, which wasn’t a surprise, though, because it had such hit makers as Max Martin, Linda Perry, Pink, RedOne, Sam Sparro, Kara DioGuardi and Lady Gaga herself among its makers. The latter even gave Adam one of her early songs, a retro pop track called “Fever”.
A track called “Sure Fire Winners” is especially popular with Glamberts (that’s how Adam’s fans call themselves). This catchy song would have become one of the must successful Adam’s works, but unfortunately it remained just a promo single.
Lambert had an extremely successful tour in support of “For Your Entertainment” album. Over 100 shows in North America, Asia, Australia and Europe. Rumor has it, “Glam Nation Tour” has become one of the most commercially successful events of 2010. The set list for each concert included well-known album tracks and cover versions of Adam’s favourite songs.
The release of Lambert’s second album was initially scheduled for the end of 2011, but it didn’t happen. After several changes in dates the album called “Trespassing” was successfully released on May 15, 2012. “Better That I Know Myself” became the lead single.
Currently, Adam Lambert is busy promoting his album and getting ready for a new tour which is rumoured to be absolutely different from the first one.
Adam Lambert is a Man with a capital “M”, no matter what. His commitment, determination and will-to-win spirit are exemplary. Such people as Adam Lambert push the envelope and break boundaries of perception. Bold, outstanding and one-of-the-kind, he unites people regardless of their colour, sexuality or bank account. With his whole life Adam tells us, “Don’t be afraid to be yourselves, take a risk and you will succeed!” He may be censured, mocked and even hated, but no one can deny that he has changed modern pop music. Editorial staff of music magazine Apelzin.ru congratulates Adam on his new album and is going to join you at his show with legendary band Queen on July 3, 2012!
