Soon after a battle between netizens regarding a video of JYJ Park Yoochun hitting a fan posted on an internet community, an internet tabloid released audio of JYJ members using violence language to fans. There is a tense conflict between people who think ‘hitting and swearing at fans are too much” and people who think “they have suffered so much that they ended up reacting that way.”

Why did JYJ hit and swore to fans? Why are these video and audio spread, when they have always express gratitude towards fans through interviews and twitters?

You, who are reading this article, are an idol member who is famous not only in Korea but worldwide. You are the ‘top’ idol member who has never come down from the top place since you have debuted. More famous you get, more rumours are spread on internet. As soon as you leave the house, taxis start to follow you. There are taxis following you for 24/7 whether you are going to hairdresser’s, going to broadcasting companies, going back home exhausted, going out to meet close people,or etc. Although you have not announced your schedule in another country, fans come to the airport and aim you with cameras. This is nothing. Text messages and phone calls at late night make you hard to fall asleep. Whenever you change your phone number because you feel someone is eavesdropping your phone calls, you would receive a text message right away: “Oppa, why did you change your phone number? Did you think I would not know if you change it?” How long can you last? If I, the writer, went through these, I would quit as soon as possible even if I have to pay to large sum of the cancellation charge to the production company.

Although you might think these situations stated above are imaginary, these were not imaginary but actualities to JYJ members. Since their debut in winter of 2003, TVXQ has been the most famous idol group not only in Korea but in Asia. They talked about saseng fans few times on TV shows. Until then, not so many people were aware of and took care of their sufferings. Only their fans came back as echo without reaction toward their appeal for respecting their private lives.

Fans who chase after them believe they became more known, members remember you and feel superior to other fans. These fans update their blogs everyday like a diary with details like where the celebrity has been, which car the celebrity rode, and etc. Also, these search words become popular search words on portal sites during daybreak.

These incidents related to JYJ show one aspect of how much saseng fans tortured them, and how much JYJ members have been experienced in towards saseng fans. Although it has not only been one or two months but over 5~6 years, the number has not decreased but even Japanese, Chinese and other foreigners with Koreans chased after JYJ. They intentionally caused car accident in order to become more known to members, sent their underwear with blood of menstruation as gifts to members. They even took pictures of members in their dormitory and sent to members.

As days have passed, the method to remove saseng fans became more aggressive. Park Yoochun did not hit saseng fan and members did not swear to saseng fans because they had ill will toward fans, but they did in order to protect themselves. Saseng fans, who would never get away regardless of any method, are already creatures scarier than ghosts to JYJ members.

Sometimes, there had been news that a stalker who stalked celebrity was placed under arrest. Saseng fans of popular idols, however, were let off with a warning because they are usually under the legal age. Despite these measures, saseng fans follow the celebrity more rigorously.

One entertainment reporter stated during the interview at a current affairs program, “It’s a mercy that members of TVXQ have not become insane.” This is true. It is a mercy that they still stand in front of the public as celebrities instead of losing their minds. The society should have negative perspective on saseng fans and consider them as social evils. The media who acts as puppets of large production company, write malice articles using materials from saseng fans, and tries to destroy the image of celebrities who are going to other countries to write the new history of K-pop should not forget one’s duty as reporters.
