Compilation of @Prof_Chadwick's live tweet re: Premier League@20 http://yfrog.com/nu3a0kij yesterday

Up and running - Premier League@20: Tyldesley "ITV were the Sky TV of the 1980s, only more cuddly"

Back in early 90s, Sky decided to "blow ITV out of the water [in order to secure the first PL TV contract]"

Barclay (Evening Standard), Boyle (FSA), Johnson (PL), White (Telegraph) now on stage

Barclay: "I underrated the PL....when it was mooted, I saw it as little more than branding and greed"

White: "not many people in broadcasting took Sky seriously. We were taken by surprise by what they have done"

Boyle: "1992 PL felt like a cosmetic change - same teams, different brand. But - teams still made losses and England team wasn't doing well"

Boyle: "Short has invested £150 million in Sunderland simply to make them a mid-table team".

Barclay: "FA very keen to 'get into bed' with PL - huge benefits for England team: fewer games, more time to prepare."

Barclay: "FA were told rubbish though by the PL"

White: "inconceivable in 1992 that we have stadiums like the Emirates."

Johnson, Premier league: "PL wasn't established in 2001. Were still on a journey, still trying to catch-up other European leagues."

Johnson: "the football is still the most important thing. Without the football, there is nothing."

Johnson: "PL is a much more benign organisation than many people imagine. We do a lot outside the top leverl"

Johnson: "bottom-line - fans pay for football. Although at some clubs, the money comes from elsewhere."

Boyle: "1992: could get onto the Stretford End for £4. Now, couldn't do that - and fans are starting to feel unreasonable about the prices"

Barclay: "PL has a question to answer: in Germany, prices are lower and atmosphere at games is different [i.e. not as aggressive as in PL]"

Tyldesley: "there is a distance now between clubs and players, and fans and the media"

Some disquiet across panel about atmosphere in stadiums and the culture amongst fans: aggressive and cynical. Did the PL create this?

Barclay: "I estimate that £5 from every ticket goes to payment of intermediaries [i.e. agents]"

Barclay: "greed was present in football long before the PL came along".

Johnson: "fans have started evaluating a player's combination of wages and behaviour"

White: "[concerned about] who owns football clubs. No regulation. Very different to ownership model in the Uni8ted States."

White: "PL far too laissez-faire in attitude towards ownership. Seem to think city of London should decide - & look what happened there"

Johnson: "NFL isn't run like communism, it's run as a closed-shop by [capitalists]"

Johnson: "annoys me when people say there is no regulation in football. But there is. Portsmouth helped us understand more"

Johnson: "ownership rules have to be set in context of domestic laws. If our rules don't comply, legal action will be taken by clubs"

Boyle: "there were problems with ownership, even before Portsmouth. PL has always been behind the curve on ownership. [No political will]"

Boyle: "PL has always fought any changes governments have proposed in the area of ownership."

Boyle: "The PL are neo-liberals: money-men know, so they should be allowed to make the decisions"

Barclay: "[football] more like legalised fraud. Think about the obvious 'wrong un' at Birmingham City"

Barclay: "Carson Leung....Google him to see what he's like. The people to blame for ownership situation is....US!!"

Barclay: "fans should start getting together and buy their clubs"

Barclay: "fans moan and cast themselves as beggars - plead with rich-owners. Don't blame the PL, it's the fault of the fans."

Barclay: "If PL adopted the 50+1 as in Germany, things would be better. Instead, price of buying a club is being set by businesses"

Tyldesley: "can 1992 ever happen again?"

Tyldesley: "could we be on the verge of another revolution?"

White: "Yes. New owners have no interest in English football. All they are interested in is the product. No interest in England team...."

"...no interest in the FA. No interest in Darlington. No loyalty to the PL!!!"

White: "there will be a European Super League. New owners want to make money...so they will look to Real & Barca to make money"

German ownership rule RT @_KevinGeorge: @Prof_Chadwick What is the 50+1?

Johnson: "PL has a very conservative constitution, & FA holds a special vote. So, changing the league & creating a super league not so easy"

Johnson: "we already have a super league - it's called the Champions League. Break-away more of a problem for UEFA than us"

Johnson: "new owners are culturally aware of the sensitivities around football. If anything, they are too soft around some of the issues."

Johnson: "new owners are concerned about [the potential for backlash]"

Johnson: "FA spends far too much time worrying about how to run top-down model of football. FA is not association of interests it should be"

Johnson: "PL feel very positive about government's proposed changes to the structure of the FA."

Johnson: "Murphy ruling was political - about EU enforcing power of the individual."

Tyldesley: implications of UEFA Financial Fair Play?"

Barclay: "PL briefed against FFP, seen as a French-plot. But now responding positively to it. Good - ensures clubs live within their means"

Audience Q: "Is CL? How can PL respond to unfair Spanish threat? Barca & Real are given advantages by govt that PL doesn't have

Debate now about tax advantages that Spanish govt gives to Barca & Real. Now EU investigating. Anti-competitive, duopoly.

Now managers: "why are there no British managers, and is it a bad thing?"

White: "management internationalised because game has been internationalised. What has REALLY changed: intellect of managers"

Barclay: "the football we have now is the football of my dreams. Don't think number of foreigners in the game is an issue. Good influence"

Barclay: "plural character of English game is a good. Look at Italian football: populated by Italians [dull]"

Audience Q: "Is Scudamore to the PL what Jobs was to Apple?"

Johnson: "Scudamore going nowhere."

Boyle: "Scudamore is like Ferguson, a 'one-off'...a very talented administrator. He has moved the PL from owners like Ellis to Mansour"

Does media lead fans or reflect fans? Does the media evoke the vitriol of fans?

White: "[I blame Sky & News International]. Made football into Hollywood in order to sell papers & satellite dishes. Now, can't reverse it"

Q: shouldn't we just accept that top-level football is no longer about sport, it's entertainment now?

Boyle: "Please, bring it on....want top-level to breakaway and just leave the rest of us alone"

Johnson: "PL gives away £130 million each year to good cause and social projects. It's not just about entertainment."

RT @owen_g Good question.Both expert at repackaging brand for ever more £ "@Prof_Chadwick: Audience Q: "Is Scudamore to the PL what Jobs was to Apple?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Boyle: "football has always been about entertainment but fans have gone from being co-producers to being watchers on Tv and internet"
Barclay: "would you chant 'you don't know what you are doing'? So why, then, chant it to a football manager?"
Hicks quoted: "I Googled Liverpool before I decided to buy them. Seemed like they had a bit of a history."
John Terry now...."why hasn't action been taken against Terry & what he has done?" Johnson: "matter for his club"
Q from Luton Town fan: has Premier League stretched football too far? White: "desperation to get into PL & then stay there dominates"
Johnson: "Luton Town & Notts County (in Div 1 in 91/92) voted for the PL. Then got relegated & have never actually played in the PL"
Boyle: "football keeps finding gullible idiots to give it money - spending big in order to stay in or get into the PL"
Johnson: "solidarity package to football = £300 million over 3 years. we take our responsibilities very seriously"
Any questions from people out there?
Q: "how important is the Asian market?"
Johnson: "Our competition is not the Bundesliga.....behind us. Super-clubs drive internationalisation e.g. Manchester United etc."
Barclay: "conclusion-I hate the way football runs. Must be run as it use to be, not as global multinationals"
Barclay: "football now is much more entertaining than it used to be."
Barclay: "PL has been a good thing"
White: "more money in the game, more than we could dream of. BUT nothing in the bottom-line, only 4 clubs made profit last year."
Boyle: "all the extra money hasn't changed football. Clubs still spending too much. Short-termism with extra 000s"
Johnson: "PL is a polyglot-led, beguiling product. Governance could be better, but almost everything else is much better. Force for good"
Tyldesley: "concerned about the 50% on top e.g. players always want 50% on top. Where has the love gone in football all-round: players etc"
The End.
