I would like very much to have a scene where Alaric tells Elena he's considering growing a mustache...
I would like it to go something like this:
Int, Gilbert house.
Alaric and Elena sit on opposite ends of a couch watching a movie staring Burt Reynolds...
Alaric's eyes are fixed upon the flickering images of Burt Reynolds mustache... He then says to Elena...
Alaric: I think Im gonna grow a mustache...
Elena ignores him...
Alaric: Im serious, Elena...
Elena: I know you are, Ric. That's why I'm not saying anything... (beat)
Alaric: What do you mean?
Elena takes a beat, then turns to him...
Elena: I'll be honest here. If you want to teach AP History from behind a ridiculous mustache, far be it for me to talk you out of doing that... I'm mean, it's not like you're seeing anybody anyway... Who knows, Ric, maybe one day you'll be shopping at WholeFoods, and you'll run into the most beautiful woman you've ever seen. She'll slowly look up from squeezing some avocados, and see you standing there, eating one more piece of free cheese. And she'll think to herself, "What a fantastic mustache that man has. I must introduce myself right away"...
Alaric holds her gaze for a moment... Then...
Alaric: Jesus H, Elena. Why don't you just kick me in the balls while you're at it...
Elena: Well, Ric. That's why I wasn't gonna say anything... (pause)
Elena: Look, I love you. And because I love you, I worry. I'm worried you've become too anti social. I worry you drink too much. And now I worry you're about to grow a mustache...
Alaric's eyes hold her gaze. Then, slowly, they are pulled away, settling back onto the flickering images of Burt Reynolds. Then, slowly, the camera pushes into an extreme close up of Burts mustache as it moves in slow-motion. Cut back to an extreme close up of the tv reflecting in Alarics eyes...
We slowly fade to black...
