Dear Nadine

I’ve been prompted to write this letter by Stavvers splendid piece informing you about her uterus, and the other letters that followed.

A few years ago one of my internal organs was proving troublesome. It was filled with this...stuff I didn’t want, or need. It caused me a huge amount of pain. I felt sick all of the time, I couldn’t eat and I couldn’t sleep.

After realising I should do something about it, I went to see my GP, a wonderful woman who my family and friends all adore. She identified the issue immediately and gave me a great deal of information. She outlined my options and suggested I went home and discussed them with my husband, family and friends, before making a decision on the path I should take.

I had a sonogram : and there it was! Some little grey blobs on the screen. This is what was causing my nausea, insomnia and pain. After the scan, at home with my husband I had some very grown-up conversations. Then after a degree of intelligent and informed consideration I decided that the surgical option was best for me, and my family.

It was very efficient, the anesthetist was a delight, making me laugh as I went under. The procedure was quick, the recovery a little slower, but I was out of hospital the same day. What a wonderful health service we have in this country.

What I don’t understand Nadine, is why my Gall Bladder surgery should be treated as so radically different from any other tissue removal procedure. I have yet to see you or the Daily Mail decry the abomination that is late-term cholecystectomy nor waste hours and hours of Parliament’s valuable time discussing it.

So why the hell do it with abortion?

Yours

Siobhan McSorley
