My primary concern here was to highlight how the kind of ire (mild or otherwise) artists are known to have for their contemporaries' works may not be as simplistically petty and self-absorbed as we'd like to think.

It's not all because of mere lost fame. Often there's also a 'larger' concern at play, married to the angst of coming to terms with one's own mortality. Different artists (people) come to terms with this differently. The 'humility' discourse also cuts short some of these concerns and tries to box people as humble/self-deprecating vs arrogant/self-aggrandizing.
