#Bahrain MOE 2011 Scandal

In another step In the way of sectarian apartheid in Bahrain; ministry of education did something at least described as a scandal when it deprived many top students that graduated from secondary school of their deserved scholarships just based on their sect, or in other words just because they are Shiite.

There is no doubt that this is a striped plan by the regime and not just acts of some employees or officials in the MOE, the following evidences prove this:

1-In this year; the MOE published the names of passed students -in both secondary & middle school- without mentioning their GPAs. The MOE justified that by what it described as "parents pressure" on the MOE (1) -i.e. if a student had a low GPA this will be considered as an insult to the parents-, as if publishing the low GPAs was not embarrassing in the last years!

2-In the last years; the MOE was only depending on the cumulative GPA in distributing the scholarships on students, but in this year; and without any advance warnings or signs, the MOE announced on June 13 (2) that it will depend not just on the GPA, but on a personal interview with graduated students organized by the MOE itself.

This interview –which doesn't take more than 20 minutes at most- will represent 40% of students' score, and the GPA, which these students had achieve it in three years of efforts will represent 60%. I think that it's clear why the MOE established the interview part this year!
In these interviews; students have been asked political questions by the interviewers. Al-Wefaq deputy secretary-general Sheikh Hussein Al-Daihi spoke out on his Twitter account about some of these questions, he said:

Translation: imagine what questions a Bahraini female student who graduated from secondary school with a high GPA has been asked in the MOE interview: 1- How many Shiite leaders do you know?! 2- Did you go to the [Pearl] roundabout?!

3-In the last years; the MOE was used to publish the in the local newspapers with the students' full names along with their Id numbers, their GPA and the scholarships they had, but in this year; the result were only published on the MOE website, where students can see their personal results –privately- by a user-name and a password given beforehand by the MOE.
This behaviour indicates very clearly to the manipulation they intended to do with these scholarships, there so no educational purpose behind it.

After publishing the scholarships distribution results –privately as I said-, Al-Wasat newspapers published on July 24 (3) a prolix report about the anger among students in relation to the scholarships issue. The report said that Zainab Isa, a student with a 99.3% GPA –the fifth among all Bahraini students- had her tenth desire (4) in her list of desired scholarships.

Note: If you are interested about this issue, you can get contact with:

1- Lamees Dhaif, a journalist who is very interested in the issue. She's collecting data from students to help them to study outside Bahrain, so she's a rich source of information. (Her e-mail: lameesdhaif@gmail.com, her Twiiter account: http://goo.gl/OP0KJ)

2- Rhadi Al-Mosawi the deputy secretary-general of Waad society, he's intrested also in the issue and he talked a lot about in in his Twitter account (http://goo.gl/n43wi).

(4): In Bahrain; a student has to list 12 desires of scholarships, most of students list only the first three of four desires meticulously and they fill the rest of the list just to complete the list as an official procedure.
