Official PRESS RELEASE by the #KhobarGirlsUnite movement

Women were not allowed to participate in local municipal elections for the second time in a row. “The Kingdom is not ready for women’s participation yet,” was the statement that the head of the General Committee for Municipal Elections, Ibrahim Al-Dahmash, gave when explaining why.

And on that basis we, a group of women from Alkhobar , inspired by the “Baladi” campaign in Jeddah decided to launch a local campaign and go to polling stations to register and get a voter’s card.

We are partners in the development of our country, and equality and justice demand that we be given this right to participate and vote. This is in accordance to a statement addressed to all citizens that lists the conditions for their participation and did not include reasoning that would make women ineligible to participate.

The purpose of this campaign is to make it known publicly and have our voice heard: that Saudi women want to participate in solving problems our society and future generations face. We have no political or material (commercial?) motives.
“Our presence at the polling station is our right, as members of Saudi society who only want good things for this country and wish to have our message delivered that we want to participate in our society’s issues,” said Heba Al-Butairi, who successfully registered at a polling station.

Since 2005, we have been told that polling stations are not prepared to accommodate women voters. However, they can accommodate prisoners and persons with special needs through legal representatives, while women are not even allowed that, despite it being feasible. Why didn’t that initiative include us?

We want to point out that this campaign has no intention to provoke or diminish the government’s efforts for reform. We simply wish to express Saudi women’s interest and concern for her society and its future generations.

The next step after this initiative is to be represented – even if by only one woman – so that we may express the concerns of half of Saudi population, and deal with issues that will otherwise not receive any attention if women are barred from participating.

All those who wish to register: You must be 21 or older (by Hijri calendar) and have a National I.D. Head to Ibn Sina School in Corniche, next to Jarir Bookstore, on April 23, 4 – 6 p.m.
