Female members occupy legislative men's washroom on International Women's Day:
In honour of International Women’s Day on Tuesday, NDP MLAs Deb Higgins and Atkinson led an occupying force of the “ Members Only” washroom,” posting a notice on the door noting it had been a washroom for male MLAs for nearly a century.
“ This washroom is now designated as a washroom for women members for the remainder of the day,” the notice read.
Now, The Notebook has never been privy to this throne room of the marble palace, but it is evidently pretty swank and roomy.
In contrast, female MLAs have to cut through a kitchenette to get to their allotted one stall, which is shared with staff of the legislative assembly.
“ You know what, it’s not a big thing, but it is,” said Higgins, the Opposition deputy leader.
“ Because it’s pretty basic when women are not given the same thing, the same basic rights that men are in this building.
“ It’s high time we were accommodating for women and accepted the fact we are part of this legislature,”
Of course, the takeover did make one wonder about the usual complaint by women about men’s bathrooms — that they are kind of, well, gross.
“ That one’s pretty nice. We’ve gone into it and checked it out. It’s marble, it’s oak,” said Higgins.
