PLEA TO THE PUBLIC:
As a student and as a fan I am reaching out and pleading with all Media to PLEASE STOP BASHING and MISUSING THIS TRAGIC AND PAINFUL EVENT that occurred between CHRIS BROWN and RIHANNA.

I’m writing you because I’m very disappointed in the media lately. Blogs seem to be so damaging and destructive and the News seems to be following their lead. My particular concern is in regards to the traumatic event of a young woman whose battered face was plastered all over the internet and publicly broadcasted on TV and news shows world wide. If this were any other victim the damaging effects of embarrassment and public humiliation and guilt would be considered. Instead these victims continue to be abused by media and bashed. You cannot enter her name in google without seeing this vivid horrid picture of such a painful event in her private life, her name is Rihanna. My concern is in regards to a young man whose face was never seen in the wake of the event, who was too ashamed to speak up for himself, and has received numerous death threats, threats of violence, the recipient of public trashing, bullying and hatred, his name is Chris Brown. Without going into the obvious discrepancy of details of the particular event, which is none of my business or of the public’s business, can we please address the misuse of this tragedy in the media?

As a student of psychology and the studies of social relations and impact; I find it tremendously disturbing that no one felt it completely uncalled for to publicize the vividly battered face of a victim. Not one person. Not one blog or news station hesitated to cover this event. Have we become so desensitized by violence that we seek and enjoy this picture? Is there really no shame in that? It sickens me that TMZ felt it was okay to publicize that photo not once but twice and over a year later posting more pics of his and her brutal injuries. It sickens me to repeatedly see and hear bloggers and radio show hosts like Sandra Rose continuously making jokes off of the topic and verbally assaulting either of the individuals involved, Chris or Rihanna. You would hope that humanity would empathize for Rihanna as a victim and stop forcing her to relive this experience every time that she is interviewed. She cannot go anywhere or speak to anyone without that incident being mentioned. Imagine if that was your face, if you were her family. People need to stop treating this as if its just any news. THIS IS SERIOUS.

You would hope that people would empathize with the young man involved as he has never been known for violence towards anyone, man or woman before. We haven’t heard of or seen anything about Chris Brown in any fights or physical altercations until this one big traumatic event, and we have yet to see his bloody lips or battered face on that night. No one questions why the famously skilled TMZ has yet to retrieve Chris Brown’s mug shot even from the night of the event when he turned himself in after the incident. Regardless of who is actually to blame and regardless of either side of the ‘two sides to every story’, the MEDIA needs to STOP ABUSING this topic.

As a fan of both Rihanna and Chris Brown I’m truly concerned for their own emotional health. I wish that the media would stop using and abusing both of them for publicity. THIS IS TRAGIC! That event was TRAGIC. Both of these individuals experienced a TRAUMATIC EVENT and the media forces them to relive it over and over like it was just some ordinary celebrity news. ITS NOT. Both of these individuals could be dealing with inner feelings of depression or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and THE MEDIA IS ABUSING THEM. They continue to burn and bash Chris Brown while harassing Rihanna.
I understand that I’m young and I’m only a student, only a fan and supporter but is this not wrong? It hurts me to see her face like that, to repeatedly see that picture just as much as it hurts me to hear people overly use the word “Woman Beater”. I’m writing this letter to plead with the public for sensitivity.
What if that was your face? What if you were the guy in that incident? What if Chris brown was your son? Your brother? What if Rihanna was your sister or your daughter? There is no way you would want those pictures out there! THERE IS NO WAY YOU WOULD NOT SUE the HOSPITAL OR POLICE OFFICER who LEAKED SUCH SENSITIVE PRIVATE VIVID PHOTOS! I’m outraged! How are we just putting up with this and feeding into this?

DO PEOPLE REALIZE THE EFFECT THAT THIS COULD BE HAVING ON THEIR YOUNG FANS? Do you realize the effect that this has on Rihanna’s fans to see that image over and over? Do you realize the effect that this has on Chris Brown’s fans to have to defend him and be partly ashamed of connecting with him? Every time he is called a “woman beater” it’s as if they are calling his fans “Woman Beater Lovers”. They are calling his young audience “Woman Beater Lovers”.

The bond between a music artist and their fans is an emotional bond when you bond to the lyrics, the voice, the words and expression of music that is a bond of the soul, of the spirit, of the heart. Regardless of what actually took place in that incident, regardless of who is to blame or what Chris’s face looked like, the fact remains that; Rihanna and Chris brown were music artists BEFORE that incident. This means that people, young and old alike, had already gotten to know these individuals through their music, through their interviews, through their contacts and for some through personal meetings. That connection has already been established. That bond between artist and audience was already strongly established.

That being said more than two people are hurt by the over use of that TRAUMATIC EVENT in the MEDIA. It offends and hurts the fans from a dynamic that isn’t even considered in all this out lashing. Those images are damaging and traumatically vivid. Imagine the effect that such an image has on the psyches of the people being forced to see this every time they google or search information on their favorite artist? Do you really want your loved one exposed to that sort of brutally violent image? Is that brutal image such a joke to the public? It hurts me to see her that way.
Not to mention how much it must HURT RIHANNA TO SEE THAT. How much is must HURT HER to continue to have to talk about it. Even how much it must HURT CHRIS TO SEE THAT, as he has expressed his guilt through word and even in his music. The pain of both of these individuals is so evident to me. I don’t understand how anyone in media, blogs, talk shows, radio shows, comedians, twitter-celebs etc. finds it okay to joke or discuss this matter as if its just any old celebrity news.

Chris Brown and Rihanna are in my prayers as I realize how damaging and hurtful all of this is and I hope that I never hear of either of them on celebrity rehab or worse. I am pleading with all media to please STOP PUBLICIZING THAT INCIDENT. Chris Brown and Rihanna are both attempting to lives their lives and chase their dreams, and express themselves in their careers, Their fans are still here, trying to simply enjoy the music and appreciate the artist. Their fans want to hear their music and see them perform. PLEASE STOP.

STOP ABUSING THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH. STOP MISUSING LAWS OF SLANDER & DEFAMATION OF CHARACTER. STOP ABUSING DOCTOR PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY & RELEASING THESE GRAPHIC IMAGES.

STOP HARRASSING& BULLYING RIHANNA and CHRIS BROWN. PLEASE ALLOW THEM TO CONTINUE THEIR LIVES. PLEASE ALLOW THEM TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THEIR FANS WITH THE MUSIC THAT THEY HAVE ALREADY BONDED WITH. PLEASE STOP MAKING A MOCKERY OF THE VIOLENCE. ALLOW GUILT AND GRIEF TO BE FORGIVEN, ALLOW THE ACTUAL YOUNG PERSONS INVOLVED TO HEAL AND COPE.

STOP HARRASSING AND BULLYING FANS OF CHRIS BROWN OR RIHANNA. BE MINDFUL THAT THESE ARE 2 YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO LIVE & HEAL AFTER THIS TRAUMA and THE MAJORITY OF THEIR FANS ARE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO LEARN AND GROW. ISNT THERE A LIMIT TO HOW FAR THE PRESS CAN GO? IF THERE IS, I THINK THIS IS IT. ITS BECOME SO DAMAGING FOR THE PARTIES INVOLVED AND THE SPECTATORS, SUPPORTERS AND FANS.
Let them heal and leave this situation be.
PLEASE STOP.
Sincerely,
A.M.
