New York, NY - Discovering new talent is one of the things that makes working in entertainment so rewarding and sometimes, if all of the stars are aligned, it falls right into your lap. This is (sort of) how I came to represent my newest client, Anthem and the AMG team; a random phone call from someone I'd never met, who had heard about my work from someone else. I thank them both, and the stars, as it will truly be my pleasure to bring Anthem's talent to the attention of the media and the music buying public and watch this project grow from a front-row seat.
Welcome to Manhattan.
Beyond the clichés "city that never sleeps" and "capital of the world," Manhattan is home to the savvy and self-made. Anthem is no exception. Sharp and sophisticated, the 25-year old emcee is a product of the aggressive and fast pace culture that helped define him. Anthem traded in a career on Wall Street for one on the mic, and is now Amoeba Music Group’s marquee artist. His music represents an eclectic range of influence, with a 90’s brand of lyricism at its core. On his debut, "Manhattan Music, Vol 1," Anthem showcases charisma, wit and charm while sharing a relatable narrative of pursuing his dreams. Given the lyrical skill, clever wordplay and range of flows he displays, it's easy to see that Anthem is one to watch in '11.
Anthem found his "come up" through hard work and perseverance. Growing up, he never knew his father, but was raised by a strong single mother who taught him that nothing in life is handed to you. Ant took this "go-hard" principle and applied it to everything in his life, which translated into academic achievement. Despite the financial hardships they faced, he earned his way into Duke University, which opened up his world. It was also at Duke where he transitioned from poetry and spoken word to rhyming, finding his passion for emceeing. After graduating, Anthem put his mic dreams on hold and accepted an offer to work as a trader at a Wall Street firm. Although it was primarily a way to help his family, it also served to bring him to Manhattan, and ultimately one step closer to his dreams.
Anthem owes much of his growth to Manhattan; both personally and as an emcee. Navigating through the cutthroat environment on Wall Street, he acquired the instincts and edge to define his own future and developed the relationship that proved critical to his transition to hip-hop. His one-time Wall Street mentor and now collaborator, DG, was the first person to recognize Ant's full potential - agreeing to back him - with the agreement that they would apply the same relentless quest for excellence to music that they did to finance. Trading by day and rapping by night, the two built out their independent label, AMG. As a young and talented duo, their narrative epitomizes both the American dream and black entrepreneurship.
Anthem has spent the past two years honing his craft; performing, songwriting, and building an online presence. During this time, Anthem has amassed a strong catalogue of original music and AMG is now set to present his debut, "Manhattan Music, Vol 1" hosted by DJ Whoo Kid.
