@nprmonkeysee @kateaurthur @televisionary It's not that Betty can't be sympathetic, it's just that Mad Men rarely seems interested in giving her consistent nuance or depth. There are a lot of interesting ideas they could explore with her, yet they just keep giving her this narrow scope and negative tone. Also, as @emilynussbaum pointed out, it's so rare this season that we ever see her be nice that it becomes something worth commenting on. It's just frustrating to me that even minor characters get nuance and creative stories on Mad Men -- but that's often not the case with Betty, esp in S4. Too often they make her complain/mean but rarely give us opportunities to like her or sympathize with her. It's just weird. I often think they *want* us to dislike her. I don't get how that is interesting, except as a means of explaining why Sally will be screwed up in future. Again, it's frustrating because the show is generally so strong, especially with the female characters. Loved Emily's mention of the elevator scene. So true.
