The 61-year old man who was in his address at Wick Farm Road, Wick, Littlehampton this morning Friday 2 July, has been safely detained by police this evening. Armed officers entered the address at 5.45pm after police negotiators had been in contact with the man during the afternoon.
No shots were fired and nobody was injured. The man has been detained under the Mental Health Act and we will be working with Social Services to assess the best of course of action hereafter.
It is too early to confirm whether a firearm, real or imitation, has been found.
Nobody else was in the address.
Police went to the address with West Sussex Social Services staff at around 11.25am this morning to support them in executing a warrant under the Mental Health Act, as there were fears for a man's safety and welfare.
Firearms officers were deployed after what was believed to be a firearm was seen inside the property. The road was closed and immediate residents were advised to stay in doors while officers attempted to help execute the warrant and help social services staff take the man into care.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: "In view of the way we swiftly contained the situation there was nothing to suggest the man was a danger to the local public. We would like to thank the local community for their understanding and patience during this time."
